Not great, February 2, 2011 By  #1 Aunt (Norman, OK USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: L'Oreal Preference Color # 5.1 Medium Ash Brown (Health and Beauty) It seems to me that the previous reviews may not be for this 5.1 Medium Ash brown, or that the color in the bottle was wrong. I tried this to kill the red and gold in my hair, and it worked, but my hair was blue. The base color on the bottle says blue, and I thought it would work without altering my base so significantly. I had to go back over it with the Loreal store-box of medium ash brown. It helped a lot but when a stylist tried putting red in my hair, it wouldn't take (not that I wanted the red, but too often going to a stylist means they put the color in your hair that THEY think would be great - and I was trying to rid myself of the color he was trying to put back in). If you're trying to cure reds or oranges, use an ash, but one of the best is the Mocha Ash Brown. Just used it for the first time and it turned the residual red a lovely chocolate color. It also did not cover the gray very well. I'm will probably have to buy a dark brown or soft black in order to cover and hide the damage this product did. I would not recommend this to others. Purple, as in, 1/2 red. How can a shade possibly minimize a color it is made out of? How can purple come out natural brown? The short answer is, it can't. And so I have gone from medium, natural brown to very dark, very red, cheep drugstore hair. My advice is to just spend the extra money and go to a stylist.
